We've rediscovered our love for nature, old hobbies put to the wayside, and the places we call home (the latter for better or worse). And one cancelled vacation after another has allowed many of us to begin investing within our own four walls, transforming our homes into a more ideal, inspired place to live, work, and play. Creating outdoor home offices and rethinking that open-concept floor plan are just a few of the ways the pandemic has impacted the way we view and decorate our homes.
These reignited passions for nature and creating a beautiful home—along with the ever-growing need for more peace and serenity in our daily lives—have influenced many of the anticipated color trends issued by Pantone, Behr, PPG Paints, and Sherwin Willams in previous months. Earth tones, ocean-inspired blues, and forest greens are all expected to be top colors in the coming year, but we asked six interior designers for their expertise on the subject. Good news, color enthusiasts: bright and cheery colors are ahead too.
Vibrance Everywhere
“Next year, I believe we’ll continue to see the resurgence of rich, saturated hues. From jewel tones, like ruby and sapphire, to earthy shades, like cypress and saffron, designers and homeowners won’t shy away from interiors lavishly swathed in color.” – Marie Flanigan
Here, designer Alessandra Branca marries a creamy, lively red with a pop of blue from the fireplace and a mix of muted colors to create an energizing yet cozy space for cocktails and conversation.
Jewel Tones
“Given the amount of unexpected time we have all spent in our homes this year, and given our need for finding feel-good happiness, I truly believe 2021 will be all about refreshing and reinvigorating color. There has been no lack of colorful spirit from interior designers over the past few years, and I believe that trend will continue. Look for everything from jewel tone colors to clear and vivid palettes to create a visually stimulating home!” -Allison Caccoma

"We have been gravitating towards a lot of yellows lately. We organize our textile library by color and have noticed that our 'yellows' basket has been growing! We are loving soft yellows used as a neutral or as an accent to pretty blues, and ochre and mustard block prints paired with earthy tones. We would love to see a room painted soft yellow with lots of stained antique case pieces and layered with collections and treasures." -Lauren Lowe
Here, muted yellow wallpaper is contrasted with rich, pastel blue sofa and colorful accent pillows. Hints of greenery complete the colorful room without overwhelming the space with color.

Neutral Walls Filled with Colorful Artwork
"As we approach the new year, there are many paint brands that are highlighting their pick for the new color trend. Sherwin Williams recently showcased Urbane Bronze as Color of the Year for 2021 which is a dark and moody tone. However, I'm currently seeing a heightened interest in clients wanting to invest and flood their walls with colorful, bold art. So, for the perfect backdrop, I'm forecasting that neutrals in taupe and warm whites are making a comeback as the color trend for 2021! For a richer palette, I see shades of jewel toned plums and soft sultry purples accenting the walls for a pop of color!" - Kesha Franklin

Ultimate Gray is one of Pantone's 2021 Colors of the Year if you're looking for something a tad darker, and these soothing neutral-colored paints are also fantastic options for getting the look at home.

Shades of Optimism
“[We're predicting] happy colors to brighten up the doldrums left by 2020. Drab and somber will fall by the wayside. More clear colors and brighter neutrals will emerge in a big way.” -Jeffry Weisman

Notes From Nature
“After all of the craziness that we have experienced in 2020, I believe people gravitate towards warm, rich colors that convey a sense of coziness, comfort, and safety. Think rich chocolate brown, moss green, and deep blues.” -Paloma Contreras
