Arizona added nearly 100,000 residents over the past year, sluggish gains by the state's historic standards, but enough to remain among the fastest-growing states in the nation.

The latest population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Arizona is the 14th-most-populous state after passing Massachusetts in 2015. Arizona grew 1.5 percent and had 6,828,065 residents as of July 1, the agency estimates.

A $175-million hotel and residential complex called WaterView is the latest big-ticket development unveiled for Scottsdale's bustling downtown district, situated along the Arizona Canal near Scottsdale and Camelback roads.

People are moving out of cold states like the Midwest and Northeast and heading south and west, particularly to Arizona.

Arizona was a big winner on population over the last fiscal year. More than 45,000 people moved to Arizona from other states.
